Most people think that doing your part to become eco friendly is someone else’s job, too much work or too expensive. While not everyone in the world is going to help create a healthier, greener world, you can help and save your self some money by doing 3 simple things. Changing the type of light bulb you use is the first step to a greener household.
While the compact florescent light bulbs do run a little more expensive by the bulb, their money saving efforts comes in by the watt. By using less energy you’re saving yourself and the planet some cost.
If you can’t afford to replace all of the bulbs in your household, start off by replacing the ones in the rooms most used. The living areas, kitchens are good places to start.
After that, just replace each normal bulb as it goes out with the eco-friendly bulbs. By doing this you’re saving money and energy.
The compact florescent bulbs or CFL uses one third less energy than their incandescent counterparts. A CFL bulb uses only 14 watts and produces a cleaner and brighter light than that of an incandescent.
Also a CFL has 10,000 hours of lifetime, while the others usually only have around 1,500 hours. You would change a normal light bulb seven times before you would have to change a CFL bulb. Like using the old bulbs leaving unused appliances plugged in is wasteful.
By unplugging unused appliances you’re saving energy and money. If you only plug in an appliance when in use, you stop the energy drain that happens even when a plugged in appliance is not in use.
Also by doing this you might save yourself costly replacements, an appliance that is not plugged in, cannot be fried by an electrical surge. The same goes with a light, if you’re not in the room turn off the light.
You cut back on energy consumption, save money, and extend the life of your light bulb. Wasting is not saving, however the use of cloth towels instead of paper towels is saving.
While it maybe easier to use a wad of napkins and then throw them away. When you look at the bigger picture, sponges and cloth towels seem a more eco-friendly alternative.
Once used a paper napkin has no more use. It is tossed out and sent to some land fill, to rot away with the other trash, whereas a towel or a sponge can be rinsed and reused. That saves yourself from money spent on paper goods, and saving a tree somewhere.
Granted it may seem like cutting a few corners here, or recycling regularly may not have much of an effect. But the more people who try, the more the effects are visible. By simply attempting to cut back the consumption of energy, and the waste of paper products, you are making a change.
Whether your motivation is to save the world, or to save your self a little bit of money by following these three simple, easy steps you’re doing us all a favor. You’re working to create a cleaner, greener world.
