Indeed, that’s mainly the point of him or her demanding a security deposit in the first place! The potential problem revolves around just what could be considered damage. For example, little holes in the drywall made to hang up pictures and other decorative objects are often not considered actual damage per se (though it would still be nice manners to simply patch them up for the next tenant after you), but every now and then there is a landlord who expects his or her property returned in exactly the same mint condition you had received it, so it is important to adhere by your lease as strictly as possible and understand it from your landlord’s perspective!
Ultimately, however, a lease is not something you want to get tangled in. The point of a contract is not to go to court, which would really be an admission of failure on the part of all parties concerned; a lease is meant to spell out the boundaries of a business transaction, and it is best to simply talk to your landlord ahead of time to make sure you leave on good terms.
Never burn your bridges, especially in the typical seller’s market that is most cities of the United States, where landlords know one another and often demand very good references, plural. So when considering your move, think not only of where you’re going to, but what you’re leaving behind. Make sure to clean up the house or apartment and repair all possible damage!
