You may be involved in a move from one house to another home. Perhaps your goods taken out of storage are just arriving from the mover and you have decided that its time to complete some run of the mill unpacking and setting yourself up around your new home. That is after the moving vans have left. Or it may be just a simple matter of round the house do it yourself repairs and home fixing as well as upgrades. Regardless of the venue you can never play it too safe around power tools.
It seems that more often than not, home, condo and even apartment dwellers are taking up what used to be called “do it yourself” projects. However since many of these would be workmen and workpeople are basically novices and neophytes lacking training and skills in these areas it never hurts to play it safe and take care – especially around power tools.
What are some of the basic recommendations when it comes to these situations? What are basic safety procedures, steps and techniques that should be employed?
First of all when working with electrical power make it a practice to turn off the power and current to the circuit that you plan to work on by switching off the circuit breaker in the main service panel. Secondly never use power tools near live electrical wires or natural gas or water pipes especially when you cut or drill into walls where these could be accidentally hooked up with or touched. It is simple as pie. Disconnect power tools on completion of your use of that specific tool or tools. Changing or replacing bit or blades. Take the time to both unplug your device from the power electrical bar and if need be let the electrical device cool down. You may well have seen comedy movies on the practice of unplugging cords by simply giving the wire a good clean snap. This may be humorous but it’s not a good or safe practice of course keep cords away from sharp edges. One twitch of your finger and lo and behold you have a live and most dangerous power instrument in your hand or on your hands. On small tug on the “trigger switch” and your power tool is now all too active as well as dangerous. Finally when storing away your precious power tools, treat them like the serious possessions that they are. Store your tools in a dry, locked storage area where children cannot accidentally get at them.
A maxim always applied is why wait for spring, safety first and foremost.
