After so many years a home can develop quite a few things that will wear out and need replacing. Windows can get broken, carpets wear out, painting has to be done, and a million and one others things. Most homeowners will tackle these projects as they need doing, but sometimes some of them can get put off longer because they can be so aggravating for a home owner to do themselves and it usually cost them their hard earned money for a plumber, electrician, or carpenter.
The things about putting off things like electrical work or plumbing repairs is that it could end up causing more damage in the long run to let it linger. When you continue to notice lights flickering when you plug in certain items, there could be a problem with the wiring or your breaker box. It could be just the outlet itself. It might not seem like such a big deal at the moment, but if it starts a fire in the home, all of a sudden it can be a catastrophe.
Fire is never something you want to mess around with because it can wipe out your entire home in a very short time and you could end up losing everything you own in it. Water damage from faulty plumbing on the other can be a slow drawn out thing to develop. Unless you have a major pipe to break that causes a flood, water damage can creep up on you slowly and quietly. You might notice a pipe dripping a small amount under a cabinet and then place a bowl under there to catch the drips until it can be repaired. If you have faucets that are leaking around your sink and onto the counter tops, you can not usually put a bowl under that. The most common way to deal with this is to simply wipe the water up when it becomes a small puddle in the area where it is leaking.
A leaky faucet might not look too dangerous to your home, but if you allow the leaking to continue for months or longer, depending on what type of counter material you have, it can cause permanent damage. If the water is getting behind the back splash or if you do not have one, it can run down the wall or into the cabinet and cause damage that way. Even if you repair the leaking faucet or replace it before it cause rotting in your cabinet, damages your dry wall, or floor, you could still have mold development. If it confined to a small area, you can probably kill it with bleach or another mold killer and it will be fine, but if it has spread to the walls, cabinet, and the floor underneath the cabinet from being wet all of the time, you could have a much bigger problem than you thought.
This kind of mold damage could mean you end up tearing out the entire cabinet, part of a wall, and the floor just to eliminate it. Keep a good check on all of the plumbing in your home and when old leaky faucets can not be repaired, go ahead and replace them. It will be one less little thing you will have to worry about turning into a big thing.
